Healthy food for kids that are just beginning to walk, needs to be nutritious and well-balanced. Any parent that spends their days running after their toddlers, knows that all their escapades need fuel and lots of it!
Since they are going through rapid developments, both physically, and mentally, toddlers need more energy and nutrition than older children or adults. From going on treasure hunts all over the house to finding out exactly what Mommy keeps in the drawer that is just a bit too high, this growing curiosity along with the newfound ability to walk must be powered by the right kind of nutrition.
Here are some tips on how to make sure you bring together the right balance to your little one’s plate, every single time.
- Friendly Fats
Toddlers’ requirements of fats and carbs are really different than your own. While you may be keeping your own carb and fat consumption on a tight leash, doing so would not be advisable for your toddlers.
Healthy food for kids, especially toddlers, should include balanced amounts of good fats and carbs. Unhealthy fatty foods like cakes and biscuits however,should be limited to once a week and mixed with fresh, juicyfruits.
- Balanced Diet for Kids
Your toddler needs robust, all-round growth and development. This is exactly why each of their plates should comprise of foods from all five food groups. Make sure they finish what’s on their plate and they’ll get their daily requirement of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, give them lots of fibre and fluids. And don’t forget to take them out to play in the sunlight every day!
- Sleep. Play. Repeat.
Like we said before, your toddlers need three meals and two to three snacks, daily. Make sure you plan these meals around their sleep patterns. In between meals, or during playtime, whip up some easy snacks or treat them to a handful of timios Whole Grain Melts. Indian summers can be quite unforgiving! Give your toddler six to eight drinks of milk or water daily, and even more during the hot, summer months. Not having enough water can make your little ones cranky and irritable and even seriously unwell! If your little one is fussy, go for specially made spill-proof sippers instead of bottles or tumblers.
- Bare Necessities
Regularly playing outside will get your little one their share of Vitamin D. In addition, Vitamin A supplements are also recommended for the normal growth of toddlers. Vitamin C is another essential, which helps kids absorb iron from natural sources.
- WARNING!! Keep Away!
Nuts can be a choking hazard for your toddlers. Avoid whole nuts as snacks for kids. Also avoid overly salty or sweet foods such as chips or candy and go for healthy snacks instead. Don’t force your toddler to finish everything on their plate, always. Overeating can lower their energy levels and would also make them dread mealtime instead of making them look forward to it!
- Sugar & Salt are usually at fault!
An excess amount of salt and sugar can be quite harmful to your children. Apart from providing the system with Iodine and calories, salt & sugar don’t really add any nutritional value to the body. That’s why it’s important to buy wholesome snacks for kids that are low on added sugar and salt content.
