How to build self-esteem in your child?

Children with high self-esteem tend to become well-rounded adults. They develop into happy people, who feel loved and understood by those around them. A high sense of self-esteem is probably one of the best gifts you can give your child when they’re growing up.

Here are some ways in which you can help inculcate positive self-esteem in your children!

The power to choose!

It’s very important to give your children the power to choose!

With a set of options preselected by you – let your children choose which healthy foods for kids, interest them the most. This will empower them to make decisions on their own, in turn giving them more confidence in their choices. For example, you simply have to offer your child a few options for breakfast, such as, scrambled eggs with toast, cornflakes with milk, a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, or any such healthy snacks for kids – finally, let your little one decide which breakfast meal excites him/her the most.

Your little helpers!

Kids need the opportunity to prove themselves to you, and also a chance to show themselves how competent they can be! This is an important part of building self-esteem as a child.

One way to promote this is to have your children help you with simple household chores, like folding clothes, participating in kids shopping, setting the table and making beds.

All they need is love!

No matter what the circumstances, the bad decisions or the failures – always remind your children that you love them no matter what. Your kid needs to be clear about the fact that your love is 100% unconditional and that you love him/her always and forever!

Perfection is impossible!

It’s important for your kids to know that perfection is a myth! Always show your children that no one can be perfect and that no one expects them to be perfect either. How you react to your child’s errors and faults will be how they deal with such situations when they become adults.

Compare me not!

It may seem trivial at first, but comparing one of your children to the other is a big no-no!

It’s imperative that you never pit your children against one and another, instead teach them to appreciate and respect each other’s talents and strengths. Show them that each person is different from the next and that all people are special in their own way.
